Sundowns and Pirates have something to prove tonight

JOHANNESBURG — Mamelodi Sundowns captain Alje Schut insists his team hardly need any extra motivation as they gear up for tonight’s crunch Premiership clash against Orlando Pirates.

The two Premier Soccer League giants will lock horns at Loftus Stadium with both clubs having endured below-par starts to the campaign.

Reigning champions Sundowns have won just one of their opening three league matches, while the Buccaneers are still without a top-flight win.

Despite this, Schut expects nothing less than a trademark fiery encounter between two of the country’s most supported teams.

“This is still one of the biggest matches in the South African football calendar which means players are always motivated for the occasion,” said Schut, who was named Sundowns’ Player and Players’ Player of the Season for 2013.

“We both have not had ideal starts to our league campaigns and a win is equally important to both teams. Big sides always want to be on top and we are no different.”

He continued: “We expect them to come at us but we also intend firing from the cylinders, which means any lapse of concentration from either side will be punishable because of the quality on the table.

“In this particular encounter it doesn’t matter who’s playing at home or away, the tempo is always raised as both sides always bring their best game.

“The one that executes their game plan best will walk away with maximum points.”
