Sunrisers in a strong position

2013-04-13 00:00

DELHI — Brilliant bowling all round put the Sunrisers Hyderabad in a strong position at the Feroz Shah Kotla Stadium in Dehli yesterday night, restricting the Daredevils to just 114 for eight.

Boosted by the return of Virender Sehwag, Dehli captain Mahela Jayawardene must have entertained high hopes when he won the toss and decided to bat on a good-looking batting wicket.

But the home team were immediately on the back foot when South Africa’s spearhead Dale Steyn captured the valuable wicket of David Warner.

If Daredevils were lifted by taking 12 runs off Ishant Sharma’s first over, they were shattered when, having changed ends, the lanky paceman made amends by capturing two important wickets with successive deliveries.

First, Jayawardene was caught by Steyn at deep mid-on, then, with his next delivery, Ishant found the edge of Sehwag’s bat, to be brilliantly caught by Cameron White in the slips.

It was left to Australia-based South African Johan Botha to try to rebuild the innings with Manprit Juneja, but the bowling was too tight to release the pressure.

Amit Mishra continued in his superb form with his leg-spin, tying up the batsmen as he bowled straight through.

While Mishra was wheeling away at one end, the support bowlers were changed rapidly and there was no weak link as the Daredevils, making a mockery of their name, laboured to 72 for five after 15 overs.

Two poor overs from Kedar Jadhav did not help the Daredevils, with two wickets falling to Thisant Perera in the 18th over. Both Pathan and Morné Morkel were caught on the boundary with indifferent shots as they tried to open up.
