Super Rugby final: Ben Tameifuna escaped red card for head-high tackle on Kankowski

2012-08-08 00:00

CHIEFS prop Ben Tameifuna should have been red-carded early in the second half of Saturday’s Super Rugby final against the Sharks.

Tameifuna, who caught Sharks number eight Ryan Kankowski across the chops with a head-high challenge early in the second half in Hamilton, escaped any punishment on the day. But yesterday he pleaded guilty to making a dangerous tackle and was suspended for one week.

Sanzar judicial officer Nicholas Davidson QC said the suspension had been reduced from two weeks to one because the player admitted guilt. He ruled that Tameifuna’s arm had struck Kankowski’s head and, while the momentum of the tackle had the potential to cause serious damage, it had not and had no effect on the game. He added that referee Steve Walsh and his assistants had not seen the incident. The match commissioner (and TV viewers) did and Tameifuna was later cited.

The puffing Sharks were trailing 20-3 at the time and the Chiefs’ superiority was so pronounced that a red card is unlikely to have had a major impact on the outcome.
