Super rugby: Hibberdene teenager to join Sharks squad in NZ

2011-03-11 00:00

YOUNG Sharks XV eighthman Marcell Coetzee of Hibberdene has been called up to the Sharks Super Rugby squad as a precautionary measure ahead of next Friday’s clash against the Chiefs.

The hard-running 19-year-old, along with Sharks XV team-mate and Springbok Sevens ace Mark Richards, left for New Zealand yesterday where they will link up with the squad upon their arrival from Melbourne on Monday.

Coetzee was set to tour Argentina with Dawie Theron’s Springbok Under-20 squad in preparation for the IRB Junior World Championship when he received word from the Durban-based franchise.

The prodigious youngster, who captained Port Natal to a 22-match unbeaten streak in 2009, spent a week training with the Sharks Super Rugby squad prior to their overseas leg and made a notable impression for the Sharks XV side in the first two rounds of the 2011 Vodacom Cup.

The former South African Under-19 back rower made a stellar debut for the Durban side in the season-opening 30-19 bonus point win over the defending champion Blue Bulls at Mr Price Kings Park a fortnight ago.

He continued his rich vein of form by getting on the scoresheet in the team’s 25-5 bonus point win over the Welwitschias in Windhoek last weekend.

Sharks XV coach Sean Everitt told Sharksrugby.co.za before his expected departure with the Baby Boks, “Marcell has had a really good run so far and has been deservedly selected for the SA Under-20 side and he’s been a deserved man of the match in both our games to date.

“I think he has a great future ahead of him; he’s still learning but certainly a standout player for us and a very important one.”
