SuperSport Series: Dolphins welcome paceman De wet

2011-09-28 00:00

IN what has been a busy off season, the Dolphins have named yet another star signing in Protea fringe fast bowler Friedel De Wet.

Unlike Australian Sean Tait and West Indian Chirs Gayle — who have only been signed for the domestic Pro20 tournament — De Wet joins the team immediately and will start against his former team the Lions in the SuperSport Series opener tomorrow.

De Wet has recently returned from county cricket, where he played for Hampshire.

He was called up to play for South Africa during the December 2009 Test against England for the injured Dale Steyn. He took 3/11 in seven overs after being handed the new ball on the final afternoon.

Dolphins CEO Jesse Chellen said that De Wet will add experience and depth to the bowling unit, strengthening an area of concern, especially during the SuperSport Series.

“He is a quality strike bowler and will be expected to lead our attack, allowing our younger bowlers to bowl around him,” said Chellan.

De Wet joins a squad full of experience which boasts no less than six Protea capped players, and includes other former Lions players Robbie Frylink and Vaughn Van Jaarsveld.

It also boasts the likes of Protea’s Hashim Amla and Imran Tahir.

All rounder Frylink said that he is looking forward to being part of a bowling attack against the Lions, which will be completed by De Wet, Kyle Abbot and possibly Tahir.

Although Frylink has spent the majority of his career on the Highveld, he said that he will be giving it his all against his former team.

“I have nothing against the Lions as the union was very good to me while I was there. However, part of the professional game is the occasional move and I hope to give it to the team this week,” said Frylink.

He added that he fitted into the Dolphins pre-season programme fresh off the Indian Premier League campaign with the Delhi Daredevils.

“To be amongst the best players in the world in a place where the enthusiasm for the game is unparalleled is an awesome experience. It benefited my game and will benefit the team when it comes to the Pro20 tournament in February 2012,” said Frylink.

Dolphins squad:

Imraan Khan, Divan Van Wyk, Hashim Amla, Vaughn Van Jaarsveld, Ahmed Amla, David Miller, Daryn Smit, Kyle Abbott, Robbie Frylinck, Imran Tahir, Saidi Mhlongo, Dane Paterson, Friedel de Wet.
