SuperSport TV coverage of KZN club rugby

2008-05-15 00:00

In a remarkable development, the Premier Division teams in KwaZulu-Natal club rugby are to have their matches featured on SuperSport.

The manager in charge of clubs for the KZN Rugby Union, Albert Hanekom, told The Witness yesterday that successful negotiations with pay TV channel SuperSport have resulted in all Premier Division teams getting one of their matches televised for viewing at a later date.

"All eight teams will feature once each in four matches showing 26-minute highlights of their fixtures that will be canned until a later date," he said.

"SuperSport will let me know when the matches are going to be featured and I will let the press and clubs know once I have heard from them."

Maritzburg Varsity chairman Zak Binikos said yesterday that his club and the first XV in particular are excited about the prospect of their match against the Zululand Rhinos being recorded and televised later on.

"Our match against Zululand has been shifted from its Friday night slot in Empangeni and is now to be the 4.45 pm curtain-raiser tomorrow to the Sharks/

Chiefs Super 14 match on King’s Park Stadium," Binikos said.

Hanekom said the six other Premier Division club rugby teams would feature in three TV matches later this season.

Meanwhile, today’s 8 pm First Division South fare at Woodburn Stadium sees PMB Collegians up against the talented young Hillcrest line-up that is coached by former Natal centre Des McLean.

This Hillcrest side showed early promise this season and all things being equal are sure to test coach Jan Botha’s PMB Collegians line-up to the utmost.
