Supermarket robbery trio sought after brazen Dundee prison escape

2015-03-02 00:00

AS shots sent pedestrians running, three prisoners made good their escape from the Dundee prison last week, using a firearm that had been smuggled to the awaiting trail prisoners.

On Tuesday, a correctional services officer and two colleagues were handing over food parcels to the prisoners who were in the courtyard when one of the prisoners produced a firearm and threatened the prison warders.

The three prisoners then forced the warders to let them out of the prison.

One of the prisoners fired gunshots outside the prison and the escapees fled the scene in a getaway vehicle — a Mercedes station wagon with a Gauteng number plate.

A stray bullet narrowly missed a passerby, penetrating her dress next to her leg.

The frantic woman ran into the police station screaming for help.

According to a police source not authorised to speak to the media, a visitor smuggled in a hand gun during visiting hours and handed it over to one of the prisoners.

“It’s negligence. The guard obviously didn’t search the visitor properly,” the officer said.

The three escapees are alleged to be the main conspirators in a supermarket robbery by a gang of 20 rifle-wielding men in October last year.

The gang had stormed the Pick and Win Supermarket last year and robbed an undisclosed amount of money before the become involved in a shootout with police as they tried to flee the scene.

The shootout left one officer, his reservist wife, a security guard and two civilians wounded.

The suspects, along with the three escapees, were facing charges of business robbery, attempted murder and possession of unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

The Dundee police station is appealing to the public to assist them in tracing the whereabouts of the three men.

Anyone who can assist police in tracing them is requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Khadu Nkabini on 071 386 5684/ 034 299 9753. Or make an anonymous call to Crime Stop on 086 001 0111.
