Supporters boost Impi in Varsity Cup quest

HAVING their supporters with them will be important to the University of KwaZulu-Natal Impi in their quest to reach the promised land that is next year’s Varsity Cup.

The Impi head to Potchefstroom to take on the University of Johannesburg in a promotion/relegation playoff to qualify for next year’s Varsity Cup.

Playing home or on the road, John Mitchell’s Impi have had large support and it lifted them temporarily in this week’s loss to the Central University of Technology Ixias in the Varsity Shield final in Bloemfontein.

“Our supporters have told us that wherever we go, they will be there,” Impi captain Lwazi Ngcungama told The Witness yesterday.

“We were 13-0 down in the final, and they rallied behind us and we managed to get ourselves in the lead,” he said.

Speaking about the game, the skipper said: “The coach told us afterwards that we lost it in the first chukka.”

After going 13 points down, the Impi were able to recover and even take the lead, but the damage had already been done and the Ixias eventually won the encounter 35-26 to secure automatic promotion to the Varsity Cup.

“Losing was not nice,” Ngcungama said.

“But, we’ve put that behind us and we’re now focusing on the next game in Potch against the University of Johannesburg,” he said. “We have to learn from the defeat and move on and focus on the next game. We’re all feeling good about the game and we’re ready to face them.”

The Impi will travel up to Potchefstroom on Sunday by bus and will return on Tuesday.

The promotion/relegation play-off will serve as a curtain raiser for the Varsity Cup final between North West University Pukke and the University of Cape Town Ikey Tigers.

Mitchell should select an unchanged side once again, including Baby Boks Cameron Wright and Gideon Koegelenberg.
