Surprise win for Uthungulu against Crusaders in only game played

2014-11-27 00:00

ONCE again, rain washed out all but one KZNCU Premier League fixture at the weekend, with defending champions Crusaders and Uthungulu the only teams able to beat the conditions.

While the weather may have been dull, spirits in the Uthungulu camp were at an all-time high as the men from up north pulled off a surprise one-wicket win in a tense affair at Addison Park.

Uthungulu vs Crusaders

Batting first, Crusaders reached 185 all out in difficult conditions, a total that would test the Uthungulu batsmen in their chase.

SA U19 batsmen Greg Oldfield was Crusaders’ top scorer, reaching a well-constructed 57, but he failed to build on his foundation as runs were hard to come by.

Bevan Williams contributed 47 and was the only other Crusaders’ batsman to contribute. Uthungulu’s attack was ably lead by Ryan Smith who finished with 4-39 in 7.5 overs.

Uthungulu’s chase was built around Eugene Zwart whose undefeated 49 was pivotal in getting his side across the line with a single wicket in hand.

Crusaders 185 (Oldfield 57, Williams 47; Smith 4-39)

Uthungulu 186-9 (Zwart 49*)

Uthungulu won by 1 wicket.
