BEING able to make those birdies and eagles on the golf course could very well help you soar to greater heights in the business world, reveals a new survey.

More than one-third of employed South Africans surveyed in a Reuters/Ipsos poll on golf and the workplace indicated that playing golf was a stepping stone to get ahead in management.

The country ranked fourth out of 24 countries surveyed, behind China (47%), India (46%), and South Korea (37%). South Africa came in at 35%.

Overall, a total of 22% of employees surveyed in 24 countries indicated that being able to play golf was a stepping stone to get ahead in management.

A total of 15% of South Africans surveyed said that they used the sport as a means to mingle with senior people and get ahead in their career.

Almost 400 South Africans were surveyed.

Those employees least likely to believe that the ability to golf is a stepping stone to get ahead in management are from France (nine percent), Russia, Brazil and Belgium (all 10%).

There were a few differences in attitudes among different types of workers: business owners (31%) and senior executives (29%) were most likely to agree that golf was a stepping stone to get ahead in management.
