Survival winner: ‘varsity college Island’ taught me a lot about myself

2012-09-11 00:00

AFTER five gruelling days, Dewet Maritz was announced the winner of the first “Survival Varsity College Island” on Friday.

The series began last Monday with nine contestants.

Maritz walked away with R3 000 cash and R4 000 worth of sponsored hampers.

“I am extremely happy. I didn’t expect to win,” Maritz told The Witness.

A section of the Pietermaritzburg campus was closed off to create a mini-island where the nine contestants stayed for five days in a shelter they had built.

The series had all the elements of the TV series Survivor and was an interesting way of teaching students about the tougher side of life.

Despite last week’s cold and rainy weather, all the contestants stuck it out until the end.

For Maritz (25), the toughest aspect of the experience was not being able to drink water as often as he wanted to.

“Time was moving extremely slowly,” he added.

There were moments when he missed home and thought about the things he felt people took for granted, like sleeping on a comfortable bed or eating whatever you want. Although he found the experience to be nerve-wracking, he said he also learnt a lot about himself.

It was also great to make new friends, he said.

Maritz, a fan of the original Survivor series, said he would do it all over again.
