‘Survivor’ director dies after accident

2010-01-15 00:00

M-NET yesterday announced the death of Durban architect Peter Jones, who was killed in an accident in Mozambique in December during the filming of its celebrity series of Survivor South Africa, which is set to go on air next week.

Jones was the creative director of Survivor South Africa.

M-Net said he died after a “freak accident”.

He was described as a “dedicated, passionate man who was loved by the television industry”.

He was employed as the art department co-ordinator responsible for the elaborate sets on the show.

Jones (49) died after sustaining serious injuries in a car accident on the remote Santa Carolina island in the Bazaruto Archipelago on December 1.

It is believed that Jones fell off a moving vehicle en route from the series set to the crew’s accommodation, several kilometres away.

He was immediately airlifted to a private hospital in Johannesburg where he remained in a critical condition in the intensive care unit. He died on December 10.

M-Net head of local content Helen Smith said M-Net and production company Endemol South Africa are deeply saddened by the loss and have offered assistance and support to both his family and to the entire Survivor South Africa team.

“M-Net and Endemol South Africa would like to take this opportunity to honour Peter for his commitment and his dedication in offering his talent, his passion and his support to this project,” she said.

Smith said that Jones worked in the local television industry for many years and will be fondly remembered by everyone who had the privilege of working with him.

It was not clear why the accident was not reported at the time.
