Suspected drunk driver crashes through wall

2014-10-13 00:00

AN alleged drunk driver crashed through a concrete wall and landed in a home yard at Umngeni Road in Sobantu at the weekend.

The red VW Polo with three occupants first hit a house on Skosana Road and swerved through the intersection, before plunging into the concrete wall.

A man identified as Andile Shabalala sustained a shoulder injury and was taken to hospital, while the other two men are believed to have fled the scene.

Neighbour Nonstikelelo Mbanjwa claimed Shabalala was not the one driving the car. “I got to the scene immediately after I heard the crashing noise and I saw Shabalala jumping into the driver’s seat trying to get out. It’s probably because the back door could not open,” she said.

The car is believed to belong to a colleague of Shabalala’s, Siboniso Ngcobo. Ngcobo, who came to the scene, said he had not authorised them to use his car.

“The car was not locked and I had left the keys in the car. He had probably seen that was not locked and knew where the keys were,” he said.

Police spokesperson Thulani Zwane said a case of using a vehicle without the owner’s permission was opened at Mountain Rise for further investigation and no arrest had been made.
