Suspected hijackers in court

A STING operation saw four men arrested for two hijackings, kidnapping, armed robbery and the theft and sale of stolen cigarettes.

The Phoenix Cluster Crime Intelligence and uMhlali K9 Unit members arrested the men at various locations between Ndwedwe and Mtubatuba late last week, for hijacking a delivery van carting a load of cigarettes on May 20. They had also hijacked a Toyota Corolla days earlier, which was used in the cigarette heist.

The joint operation, which took place on Friday last week, saw two firearms confiscated and the cigarettes recovered after they had already been sold on to a Mtubatuba general dealer, said police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane.

“The lorry was hijacked on Hlophe Road, Ndwedwe, when the Toyota Corolla forced the driver to stop. Armed, the suspects ordered the driver out of the driving seat, kidnapped him and then drove to an apparent safe house in the area to offload the cigarettes,” he said. The suspects then drove to an area in Smamane, handed the lorry back to the driver and took off in the Corolla. The Corolla had been hijacked in Bellair.

Thusi Sithembiso (21), Phewa Mtholeni (33), Muzi Magwaza (33) and Shelembe Mthokozisi (18) appeared in the Ndwedwe Magistrate’s Court.
