Suspected rapist says ‘no’ to bail

2009-11-18 00:00

A MAN charged with the rape of a five-year-old girl, who was one of two siblings allegedly slain by their mother in a bid to destroy evidence of the alleged rape, yesterday abandoned his application for bail in the Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court.

The man, who cannot be named until he has pleaded to the charge, appeared briefly before magistate Divesh Mootheram.

Through his legal aid attorney he indicated that he no longer wishes to apply for bail.

The case was postponed to December 8.

State prosecutor Ricky van Wyk said the investigation into the case is complete, and the matter has been referred to the office of the director of public prosecutions for a decision on the future course of the case.

The Mbutshane community at Sweetwaters was shattered last month by the murders of five-year-old Nontobeko and her three-year-old brother, Xolani Mngadi, allegedly by their mother, Zanele (24).

She is due to appear in court in connection with the deaths again on Friday.

She faces two counts of murder and one of defeating the ends of justice.

The children were found in a locked room, having been stabbed to death on October 26. Their throats were slit.
