Suspected thief ‘beaten by his uncles’

A VIGILANTE attack in which a suspected thief was killed in Imbali near Edendale on Monday was allegedly started by his family, an eyewitness told The Witness yesterday.

Two men, aged 21 and 31, were arrested and will appear in court on a murder charge.

The community member, who asked not to be named, said: “He was tied with rope and his family assaulted him. The community joined in the attack.

“But strangely the police haven’t taken statements from the family, but only from community members. They should be taking statements from the deceased’s uncles who started the assault.”

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Joey Jeevan said that when the police arrived in Azalea in Imbali on Monday morning, they found the man lying on the ground.

About 30 people were dancing around him, brandishing sticks and iron rods.

“Police rushed the injured man to Edendale Hospital where he died on arrival. He had sustained multiple wounds to his head and body, believed to have been inflicted by blunt objects,” said Jeevan.

The arrested men were found in possession of a golf club and were charged with murder. They will appear in court soon.

“We appeal to communities not to take the law into their own hands. Crimes must be reported for justice to take its course,” said Jeevan.

It is alleged that the victim was caught after he jumped over a locked gate and entered a relative’s house through a window.
