Suspects in car torching given bail

2013-08-22 00:00

THREE men made a brief appearance at the Richmond Magistrate’s Court yesterday for alleged malicious damage to the municipal speaker’s car.

Nquthuva Mkhize (37), Mduduzi Dlamini (40) and Ndelu Sithole (39) were granted bail of R500 each. They appeared in a packed court, as their families and supporters attended the hearing.

Dlamini also appeared in connection with a case of intimidating Richmond Mayor Andrew Ragavaloo and was released on a warning in that case.

Speaker Thulani Shabalala escaped a mob attack at his home in the early hours of Friday, when stones were thrown at his house and his double-cab bakkie was set on fire.

The men were arrested on Monday after members of the police, the Richmond detective members and the Pietermaritzburg Project Team made a breakthrough in their investigations.

Dlamini is also charged with using a loudhailer to incite people to participate in a Spar industrial action.

The prosecutor said that more suspects will be arrested as the investigation continues. He said they are waiting for a police video that was recorded on the day of the protest near the Spar.

After the men were released, they all gathered outside the court with their supporters and peacefully dispersed.

The accused will be back in court on September 16.
