Suspended terms for life cover fraud

2014-08-07 00:00

TWO women who benefited from fraudulent insurance policies have been sentenced to eight- and four-year terms, wholly suspended for five years by the Pietermaritzburg high court.

Thembeni Nsele (50) and Hlengiwe Nkosi (41), both from Njampela area of Nongoma, sat with their faces lowered in the dock while Acting Judge Sibusiso Mngomezulu handed down the sentence. They had pleaded guilty to fraud and were convicted on Tuesday.

Nsele and Nkosi took out insurance policies from different companies with the identity documents of people not known to them.

Later they would produce death certificates for the insured people so that they could claim from the policies.

They said they knew what they were doing was wrong.

Mngomezulu said this kind of crime was prevalent in South Africa as electronic and print media reported such incidents daily. “Circumstances show that you were motivated by greed as you were both employed. You allowed yourselves to be used,” he said.

Nsele was sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment, suspended for five years on condition that she is not convicted of a similar offence in that period.

Nkosi was sentenced to four years’ imprisonment suspended for five years.
