Swimming: Westville crowned KZN champions for sixth year in a row

2013-03-05 00:00

WESTVILLE Boys’ High continued their total dominance of KZN swimming by being crowned the KZN champions for the sithth year in a row at the Alex Baths in Pietermaritzburg last Wednesday.

They won 23 of the 26 events on the evening. These results have only ever been bettered by their team of 2012, which won all 26 races.

South Africa’s swimming giants dominated proceedings from the first race. The gala opened with the freestyle events. Previously, Glenwood had won the U14 event, but this evening it was won by Westville.

As expected the Westville’s U14 breastroke team was beaten by their Glenwood rivals, but the rest of the breastroke races were again monopolised by the Highway’s swimmers.

The Westville contingent then proceeded to win all the backstroke and butterfly races as well.

After 20 events, Westville had only lost one race, but on the final stretch, in the last five medley races, they lost the U14 medley to Glenwood in a very close race and the U16 medley to Clifton.

Although Westville are still stamping their authority in the pool, the other schools are certainly catching up. The Maritzburg College U17 and U19 age groups chased Westville home in many of the events, with Clifton and Hilton also putting Westville under pressure in those age groups.

On Friday evening, Westville also won their sixth consecutive Durban and Districts gala.

Results of the KZN Top 8 Gala: 1. Westville 245, 2. Clifton 185, 3. Hilton 173, 4. Glenwood 145, 5. Maritzburg College 126, 6. Kearsney 103, 7. DHS 67, 8. Northwood 62
