Swine flu: Court in a flurry as magistrate refuses to share room with ‘sick’ woman

2009-08-07 00:00

WITH the swine flu scare uppermost in everyone’s minds, the mere inkling that a court interpreter might have some of the symptoms was enough to send district court officials in Pietermaritzburg’s D-court and members of the public into a flurry this week.

The court did not function from Wednesday afternoon until lunch time yesterday because the magistrate was not happy to share a courtroom with a person suspected of having contracted the virus, which is highly infectious.

However, the interpreter concerned — who declined to speak to The Witness — allegedly maintained that whatever she said in relation to her illness had been misconstrued.

A decision to send the interpreter home was nonetheless eventually taken after much huffing and puffing by the court management at lunch time yesterday.

The court then reconvened, but only momentarily as the building was shut down for the afternoon due to an interruption to the water supply.

The interpreter has been asked to provide management with a medical report concerning her alleged flu.
