T20: KZN Inland beat Border at the Oval

2012-01-09 00:00

THREE starring roles in three different disciplines ensured KZN Inland a 16-run victory over Border in the Provincial T20 Challenge at Maritzburg Oval yesterday.

At the top of Inland’s 150-run total, opener Devon Conway hit a high-class 69 studded with boundaries. In Border’s 134-run reply, Rudi Hillermann took four for 20 with the new ball including three in his first over.

And to cap it all, captain Kyle Nipper conjured up two brilliant catches and a top-end run out.

After Border had put Inland in, Conway timed the ball sweetly from ball one and rattled up a 50-run opening partnership with Glen Addicott by the fifth over.

Conway’s unfortunate 14th-over dismissal, thanks to a superb Luthando Mnyanda run out off his own bowling, put the brakes on what could have been a memorable century, but his 69 off 45 deliveries — including seven fours and a six — set up Inland’s victory.

Then Hillermann, aided by Inland’s exemplary performance in the field, knocked over the top four Border batters in next to no time — Nipper having a crucial hand in the demise of the East London lads’ in-form Kevin Bennett, Romano Ramoo and Darryl Brown.

It was a heartening performance that christened the new coffee shop, which will be open for all matches at the Oval, and bodes well for the PMB side’s meeting with KZN Coastal in Durban from Thursday. Coastal’s weekend in Port Elizabeth went from very promising to very disappointing and they might find they have a game on their hands against the less-fancied Maritzburgers.
