THE murder of an elderly farming couple at Luneburg near Paulpietersburg has sparked outrage.

In the meantime, the KwaZulu-Natal Agricultural Union Congress heard yesterday that Bheki Cele, deputy minister of agriculture, is to prioritise the issue of security on farms.

Nico Lens (62) and his wife, Marcia (52), were found shot dead on their farm, Commieskraal, at around 5 pm on Wednesday.

Neighbours reportedly found Marcia Lens’s body in the bedroom after an emergency signal came through on the farm radio system, said AfriForum spokesperson for community safety in KZN, Eugene van Aswegen.

Her husband was later found shot dead on the outskirts of the farmyard.

The couple had a daughter, Kristien.

Police confirmed yesterday that they have detained three suspects for questioning in connection with the murders.

Van Aswegen described the couple as “quiet and lovely members of the community who had a good relationship with their workers”.

The killings were condemned by both Afriforum and Koos Marais of the KZN Agricultural Union’s security desk.

Marais said Kwanalu was concerned about yet more callous murders of members of the farming community.

“This is not just a loss to the local community, for the country. We call on the police to do everything possible to track down these merciless killers and bring to court. We call on the courts to mete out just sentences for farm attacks and murders,” Marais said.

Afriforum meanwhile yesterday complained to the national and KZN police commissioners that police were slow to respond to the attack at the Lens farm.

Ian Cameron of Afriforum told The Witness police arrived one-and-a-half hours after the incident, although they are only 30 km away. The canine unit from Newcastle arrived three hours later.

“The canine unit wasn’t even in uniform. The community was [there] first ,” Cameron said.

He said there have been 89 attacks on farms since the beginning of the year, with 22 farms attacked and five murders last month alone.
