Take on the Mile for charity

2014-01-28 00:00

WHILE some swim the Midmar Mile for their own personal challenge, others do it to raise money for charity.

One family has decided to dedicate their training and swim the famous race for a charity that is close to their heart.

The Mills family — Greg Mills and his daughters Jessica and Daniella — have been training for the big swim and this year it’s in aid of the Sunflower Fund.

The fund raises money to fund the bone marrow registry, which attempts to find donor marrow for people suffering from leukemia. They are encouraging swimmers who would like to swim for a good cause to sign up to support their charity.

Each swimmer involved obtains sponsorship for each mile covered and some swimmers are even taking on the longer distances on Monday, February 10.

The Midmar Mile is the world’s largest open water swimming race and South Africa’s most prestigious swimming race.

Kenwyn Geyser, the PR behind the fundraising campagn, said: “It is both heart-warming and encouraging to see sportsmen and -women eagerly supporting the fund by doing the activity they are so passionate about.

“The funds they raise allow us to recruit more donors to the South African Bone Marrow Registry, bringing hope to all the patients who are so desperately searching for their perfect donor match,” said Kenwyn.

Greg Mills said: “I am keen to swim for a good cause. I don’t support beggars on the street or people who can help themselves, but when it comes to diseases and those who are suffering from them, it’s a different story because they didn’t ask to get sick.”

• Anyone swimming the Midmar Mile who would like to do it for a worthy cause, can sign up by contacting Kenwyn Geyser on 083 632 3224 or e-mail: kenwyn@sunflowerfund.org.za
