Talks won't affect taxi commuters

2012-04-05 00:00

TAXI commuters in Isipingo will not be inconvenienced when associations meet today and next week to solve a dispute between their members.

A dispute within one particular taxi association in Isipingo, near Durban, resulted in a police clampdown in which most taxis from different local associations were impounded yesterday. Speaking on behalf of the South African National Taxi Council (Santaco) in KwaZulu-Natal, Mzimane Mthiyane said a conflict amongst the same members of a taxi association had resulted in the taxis being impounded.

The operators decided to stop work following this action. “If the vehicles are removed over licences or unroadworthiness, it goes beyond the passengers and commuters, and they will ultimately suffer,” he said.

Mthiyane said the associations decided to resolve the issues through meetings, which would be held today and on Tuesday. “This is not a difficult and serious matter, and we will find a solution,” he said.”
