Tanker driver dies after vehicle demolishes house

A WATER tanker driver died after losing control of the vehicle, which hit a pole before crashing into a house in France township on Saturday morning.

Sikhangelenkosini George Ndlovu (29) was employed by Hambanathi Plant and Civils.

Kwazi Xaba said, “We were asleep when we were woken by a loud bang and we thought we might be in danger.”

He said they discovered that their neighbour’s house, where his younger brother Gcinukuthula (22), had been sleeping, was destroyed.

“We searched for my brother in the rubble but could not find him. We thought he had died until we heard him scream,” he said.

Xaba said his brother had been injured on the head and left leg, and was taken to hospital.

The house owner, Thabani Kunene, said his neighbours helped them with accommodation while his lawyer handled the incident for him.

Hambanathi Plant and Civils owner Preggie Naidoo said there were skid marks on the road to prove that the truck’s brakes were in good condition.

“This was a pure accident and it is regretted that I have lost my driver in such an unfortunate incident,” he said.

Naidoo said they were in talks with the Kunenes over compensation for the destroyed house.
