Tarantino in town

QUENTIN Tarantino fans are in for a treat this weekend . The legendary director’s much-anticipated film, Inglourious Basterds, opens at CineCentre at the Liberty Midlands Mall today.

Starring Brad Pitt, Eric Roth and Diane Kruger, the film tells the story of a group of Jewish American soldiers whose job it is to perform swift and shocking acts of retribution in World War 2 France.

The group, known as The Basterds, is led by Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Pitt), and together with undercover agent, Bridget von Hammersmark (Kruger), are on a mission to take down the leaders of the Third Reich.

Their mission leads them to Paris where they meet Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), who, in the first year of the German occupation of France, witnessed the execution of her family at the hand of Nazi Colonel Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz). Shosanna narrowly escaped and now has revenge plans of her own.

Pitt was the first actor to join the ensemble cast after Tarantino flew to France during preproduction to meet with him. “I’d met Brad a couple of times, and I knew that he was interested in working with me, and I was interested in working with him,” he explained.

“But it doesn’t usually work that way with me. It is always the character first, and as I was writing Aldo Raines, I realised ‘hey this could be a good role for Brad’.

“By the end, I started getting nervous, because what do I do if he doesn’t do it? And when I was finishing up the script, I knew we had to start right away. So I was panicking, thinking:‘What are the chances that the most in-demand movie star wants to do it and will be available exactly when I need him, which is right now’. Sometimes the movie gods smile on you.”

Also new to Pietermaritzburg cinemas this weekend is Gerard Butler’s new film, Gamer, a high-concept action thriller, set in the near future when “mind-control technology” has become a dangerous new reality.

In the film, reclusive billionaire Ken Castle (Michael C. Hall) has created the most controversial form of entertainment — Slayers, a hugely popular multiplayer online game that allows millions to act out their innermost desires and fantasies in front of a global audience. Gaming has evolved into a terrifying new dimension: people playing people.

At the centre of this first mass-scale shooter online game is Kable (Butler), the superstar and cult hero of Slayers. But Kable is not his own man. He is controlled by Simon, a young gamer with rock-star status, who continues to defy all odds by guiding Kable to victory each week.

Taken from his family, imprisoned and forced to fight against his will, this modern-day gladiator must survive long enough to escape the game, regain his free will and identity, rescue his wife and family and save mankind before Castle’s ruthless technology spirals even further out of control.
