Taverns in KZN ‘next to schools, churches’

2014-10-22 00:00

PLACES of debauchery are slowly but surely encroaching on places of worship and learning, says Transport, Community Safety and Liaison MEC Willies Mchunu.

In a report tabled at the Community Safety and Liaison Portfolio Committee meeting in Pietermaritzburg yesterday, Mchunu said many taverns are located uncomfortably close to churches and schools.

It emerged that there are 673 legal liquor outlets next to places of worship and 930 such outlets next to schools in KwaZulu-Natal.

“The negative impact of alcohol on the social fibre is obvious for all to see.

“These outlets contribute to criminality. It is even worse to find these outlets next to schools and churches,” said Mchunu.

In terms of the law, liquor outlets, including bottlestores and taverns, should be 500 metres away from places of worship and learning institutions.

eThekwini Metro had 222 outlets next to churches and 251 next to schools, followed by Ugu district (118 and 126), uThungulu district, incorporating Empangeni and Richards Bay (72 and 92) and uMgungundlovu, incorporating Pietermaritzburg (60 and 91).
