EZINQOLENI police are investigating two cases of culpable homicide after a minibus taxi ploughed into a group of pedestrians on Sunday night.

Two women were fatally injured after the taxi driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle on the Port Edward main road at Nondalani near Ezinqoleni.

Police spokesperson Captain Gerald Mfeka said: “He [the taxi driver] allegedly missed the curve next to the bus stop and knocked into three pedestrians standing at the bus stop.”

Nokulunga Truelove Cele (28) died at the scene. Saraphina Bongekile Cele (44) died at the Port Shepstone Regional Hospital yesterday morning.

“It is unknown at this stage if the victims are related,” Mfeka said.

Michael Thobela Radebe (26) sustained minor injuries and was discharged from hospital yesterday.

“Ezinqoleni detectives are investigating two cases of culpable homicide and one of reckless and negligent driving.

“The driver has not been arrested,” Mfeka added.

The taxi association could not be reached for comment at the time of going to press.
