Taxi dispute: arrest welcomed

2011-10-17 00:00

TRANSPORT MEC Willies Mchunu has welcomed the arrest of a prominent leader in the Mpumalanga Taxi Association.

This operator (who cannot be named before appearing in court tomorrow) is a former chair of the association in Hammarsdale and was arrested last week on various charges, including conspiracy to murder.

Mchunu said he is disappointed that some operators intimidate others, which had disturbed operations last week. He has called for calm and assured commuters of their safety as police have been deployed in the area.

In a statement yesterday Transport Department spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said that at the beginning of last month Mchunu presented the findings of an investigation into the dispute between two factions of the Mpumalanga Taxi Association. “It became clear … that divisions between the two factions are deep and irreparable … [and that] illegal operators will be kicked out from the association and will not be allowed to apply for new operating rights.

“We met with both factions and presented to them a way forward to resolve their issues,” he added.
