Taxi driver: Date for trial on horror crash

2012-10-26 00:00

THE trial of taxi driver, Khululeka Bongani Gwala (23), who faces 15 counts of murder and other charges arising from a collision at Copesville on September 30 last year, will take place in the Pietermaritzburg high court from December 3.

Gwala, who is on bail, made a brief appearance in the high court yesterday for the trial date to be finalised.

Besides the murder charges, he faces four counts of attempted murder and reckless and negligent driving arising from the incident.

The state alleged at his bail hearing that he had caused the deaths of the victims when he overtook “bumper to bumper” stationary traffic on a blind rise, resulting in an accident when he tried but failed to avoid an oncoming truck.

Thirteen occupants of the taxi died at the scene and two others in hospital.
