Taxi robbery: sobantu man denies murder

2012-04-17 00:00

A 26-YEAR-OLD man pleaded not guilty in the high court in Pietermaritzburg yesterday to charges of murder, attempted robbery and the attempted murder of a metered taxi driver.

Mhleli Khehleni Mbambo of Sobantu pleaded not guilty before Judge Jerome Ngwenya.

He denied that he took part in the robbery of City Taxi, the murder of Mandlenkosi Sukude and the attempted murder of driver Selby Jabulani Zondi.

The 42-year-old Zondi testified in court that he was hired by commuters to take them to the Grange during the early hours of May 15, 2006.

At about 1 am he arrived at the Grange to drop his customers off.

On his way there the taxi broke down. When they arrived in the Grange, he phoned for another taxi to collect his customers.

While they were waiting for that taxi, a group of three men approached him and demanded money from him at gunpoint.

He said he could not see the men clearly in the dark.

Zondi was hit by a bullet and fired back with his licenced firearm.

After two of the men fled, he saw Sukude lying on the floor and realised that he had been shot.

Mbambo and Sukude were friends and it is alleged that they planned the robbery.

The trial continues.
