Taxi slams into police vehicle, injuring 17

2011-08-05 00:00

TWO crime prevention unit officers from Bulwer escaped with minor injuries after a minibus taxi with 15 passengers ploughed into the back of their vehicle yesterday afternoon.

The police vehicle in turn crashed into the back of a stationary truck.

Emergency personnel said 15 people were injured, four of them seriously.

One of the officers, Bhekinkosi Mbhele, whose partner is one of the injured, said they were driving down Chota Motala Road in the slow lane when the traffic lights at the corner of Chota Motala and Willowton turned red.

“My colleague and I were coming from a local shooting range driving back to Bulwer when I heard a loud bang. I was waiting for the robots to turn green and there were other vehicles both behind and in front. As I hit the brakes my colleague hit the windshield, but she did not fly through,” said Mbhele.

After hitting the truck the van swerved and hit a guard rail and came to a stop.

Taxi conductor Mbheki Mdebengu said they were driving to town from Northdale. The driver had complained about the brakes earlier.

“We had brake failure and since we were going down, and with the traffic congestion in the area, it was difficult to control the vehicle,” said Mdebengu.

Paramedics had to extricate the taxi driver from the wrecked vehicle.
