Taxi trust fund ready to register

2011-10-25 00:00

THE KwaZulu-Natal Transport Alliance is hoping to finalise the registration of its trust fund with the Financial Services Board by the end of this month, alliance general secretary Bafana Mhlongo said yesterday.

Mhlongo said the fund will be set up with or without the blessing of the provincial Transport Department, which is against the idea.

The fund aims to compensate taxi accident victims depending on the nature of their injuries.

Mhlongo said the Road Accident Fund (RAF) does not pay passengers involved in accidents in taxis whose drivers have no professional drivers’ permit, so the planned fund will play the role of the RAF.

“We will not be like the RAF, but at least our vision is to give support to accident victims,” said Mhlongo.

He said that contributors to the fund will be taxi drivers and owners.

Other stakeholders will be consulted once the registration process is finalised.

Transport spokesperson Kwanele Ncalane said the alliance wants to promote lawlessness and that the reason the RAF does not pay out in some taxi accidents is the unavailability of permits to control such vehicles.
