Teacher gunned down at school

2008-06-26 00:00

The KZN Education Department has sent psychologists to Isidingo Combined Primary School in Umlazi’s J section after a teacher was murdered there yesterday.

Mpho Shibe (42) was shot by an unknown gunmen in the school driveway at about 7.45 am.

Superintendent Daniela Veldhuizen said three men are reported to have alighted from a light-blue Toyota Tazz with a Durban registration parked in the driveway, leaving two others inside.

The three fired three or four shots at Shibe, who was walking with a female colleague.

“The other woman was unharmed, but the whole school is obviously traumatised and school had to be closed,” said Veldhuizen.

She said the motive is still unclear, but robbery has been ruled out.

Education MEC Ina Cronjé and superintendent-general Cassius Lubisi have condemned the incident.

Cronjé sent her condolences to Shibe’s family and to the teachers and pupils at the school.

The murder follows a similar incident in kwaMashu earlier this month, where a 49-year-old school principal was shot by an unknown gunman outside her home on her way to school.

Veldhuizen could not say if the two were connected.

No arrests have been made.
