Teacher union set to strike

2014-02-20 00:00

TEACHER union Sadtu is threatening to go on a national strike over wage increases and the reinstatement of Department of Basic Education Director-General Bobby Soobrayan.

The union served the department with a notice to protest on Tuesday.

Soobrayan was recently cleared of charges of misusing funds and signing an agreement on the department’s behalf without having the authority to do so.

Sadtu accused Soobrayan of violating the Public Finance Management Act and had called for him to be axed.

They have taken issue with the 1one percent pay progression teachers receive as opposed the 1,5% other public servants receive.

South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) provincial secretary Mbuyiseni Mathonsi said provincial leaders had visited schools at Ulundi and Nongoma to discuss other issues.

“We want to know that our members are enjoying their benefits,” Mathonsi said.

Today, Sadtu is expected to launch their election campaign at Ulundi.

Sadtu’s national deputy general secretary, Nkosana Dolopi said they are running out of patience over the salary disparities and feel it cannot be resolved through mediation.

The union’s national executive committee is expected to discuss protest dates.

Basic Education spokesperson Panyaza Lesufi said they will meet with the union today and he remained hopeful that the issues could be resolved.

He said the department had been taken aback by Sadtu’s threats.
