‘TeamKhaya’ celebrate as KZN singer wins

2012-10-03 00:00

THE family of Khaya Mthethwa (25) were overwhelmed and thankful yesterday after the Durbanite was named the winner of Idols season 8.

His win was announced at a gala finale held at the Mosaïek Teatro in Johannesburg last night.

His father, Themba Mthethwa, told The Witness the family were totally overwhelmed with the support his son had received. “We want to thank everyone in South Africa, especially #TeamKhaya, for the support they have showed him. We just want to say thank you for the overwhelming support,” said Mthethwa senior.

He said that Khaya’s life has changed.

Khaya will arrive back in Durban on Saturday, where he will be paraded around the city by rickshaw. On Sunday, they will meet at Umlazi Oasis Church, where the family attends church, to give thanks.

Calling his son a “child of KZN”, Mthethwa said the mayor of Durban, James Nxumalo, would also host an event to congratulate him.

While speaking to The Witness, he said the family were celebrating at M-Net’s headquarters in Randburg.

He added: “#TeamKhaya is celebrating and having braais all over Jozi tonight.”

Speaking after he had been announced as the winner by the show’s host ProVerb, Khaya was brief: “Thank you to every single South African that has believed in me. Thank you Jesus, and thank you to my family.”

Khaya took this year’s title after receiving more votes than fellow finalist, Melissa Allison (23) of Port Elizabeth.

The official vote figures will only be released on Friday.

Among his prizes are R500 000 in cash from Samsung and KFC, R50 000 worth of Samsung products, airtime and data from Vodacom, a Ford Fiesta, a R30 000 fashion voucher from Truworths and others. He will also sign a record deal with Universal South Africa.
