Technical officials’ workshop, two road races and a business relay

2009-11-13 00:00

ALTHOUGH Athletics South Africa is suspended from the South African Olympic Committee (Sascoc), the majority of events will continue in KwaZulu-Natal with a technical officials workshop scheduled for December 5.

This is open to all who are interested in becoming officials, in particular school teachers and sports management students. The workshop will be at the King’s Park Athletics Stadium boardroom from 8am to 5pm. The KZNA office has more details on 031 312 9374 during office hours.

The local track-and-field league events are now complete for 2008 with the next meeting scheduled for January 16. This means the Kwanaloga Games will be the last track- and-field event of the year, running from December 11 to 13 and hosted by Umgungundlovu District.

There are only two road races and a business relay this weekend with the Edendale 10 km development run and walk in Pietermaritzburg offering over R13 000 in prize money.

The event is organised by the Comrades Marathon Association in combination with Msunduzi Municipality and the tourism association and starts from Wadley Stadium in Georgetown, Edendale. There are 10 km and five kilometre distances with the longer distance commencing at 7.30 am.

Although the course is relatively undulating with the second half deemed harder than the first, the top runners will be stretched to their best by the R2 500 first prize. Cash prize money is allocated to all age categories above 15 years. Entries will be taken at Comrades House today and at the start on race morning. Thami Vilakazi at the Comrades office has more details at 033 897 8650.

In Durban, the annual Stella Tribute 15 km race will start from the Davenport Road clubhouse at 6 am.

This event is open to both runners and walkers and requires two laps of a relatively hilly circuit sitting on the side of Glenwood and Umbilo suburbs.

The Stella club is to be congratulated for keeping this event on the calendar given the difficulties they have had with sponsorship for the event this year. Cecil Sher has more details at 083 566 3333.

A large number of runners and walkers will converge on the King’s Park outer fields for the annual KPMG Business Relay, which commences at 3 pm tomorrow.

The competition is for teams of three walkers or five runners, each of whom complete a flat, fast out and back five kilometre route on NMR Avenue. In addition to different company categories, there are prizes for the top men, women and mixed teams and all runners receive medals.

Race registration is open at the King’s Park grounds in Durban today from 10 am to 4.30 pm and again tomorrow before the start from 10 am to 2 pm. Wayne has more information on the relay at 033 341 0790.

Next weekend will provide a rest for road runners as the Newlands Athletic Club’s Thompsons Tasty Meats 15 km has been cancelled due to lack of sponsorship and the following weekend the Lamontville 15 km run and walk has also been cancelled.

Durban Athletic Club’s historic Calder Cup /Sulin Trophy 10 km race that traditionally marks the end of the road running season in KZN has been cancelled.

This popular event was scheduled for December 20, but the city has prevented any race taking place during the 2010 roadworks.
