Teen cleans up at Giba Gorge

2009-07-04 00:00

SIXTEEN-year-old James Reid surprised his rivals with technical skill and strength to win the 48-km Giba Gorge Birthday Challenge last weekend.

The youngster was not intimidated against a strong field that included Roan Exelby and David Leiman, and recorded a convincing five-minute win over Leiman, with Exelby fading to third, on the tight course.

The route was a real mountain biking challenge with plenty of steep climbs and over 80% run on single track, but Reid was superb as he broke away with Leiman on the first of two laps and had a small lead going into the second loop in the popular mountain bike park just outside Durban.

It was a good day for the youngsters, with the talented Luke Roberts claiming fourth ahead of Shaun Peschl and Carl Calverley.

In the women’s race Shawna Thunder was a comfortable winner, three minutes clear of Robyn Adendorff then Sarah van Heerden.
