People came in large numbers to watch and to take part in the 15th annual Capital K swimming competition raced at Midmar Dam yesterday. The competition’s theme was “family, fun and friendship”.

A 15-year-old swimmer with cerebral palsy raised R10 000 yesterday to buy a wheelchair for his disabled friend.

Speaking to The Witness, Sebastian Crawford, who completed both the one- and three-kilometre races, said: “Although I did not get the winning prize, it was a worthy cause for me as I managed to raise money for a friend in need.”

Sebastian, who said he needed at least R17 000 to buy the wheelchair, got even more than he hoped for, as before the event he had already raised R11 000.

Another young swimmer, Olympian Chad Ho (18), won both races and recorded the overall fastest time.

His overall prize money was R2 000, which he gave away to charity. Expressing his excitement, he said: “I am very happy as I am a huge fan of open water swimming. If I am still in South Africa, I hope to swim in the race again next year …”
