Teenage axe-murder survivor out of hospital

CAPE TOWN — The young victim of an axe attack that left three of her family dead is now undergoing rehabilitation.

Spokesperson of the family advocate Martin Coetzee confirmed Marli van Breda (16) has been discharged, but did not want to say where she relearning to use her muscles after the attacker left her with serious head injuries in her family home on the golf estate in Stellenbosch. She had suffered a deep gash in her head and a neck artery was damaged. “We want Marli’s recovery to take place without disruptions and will not say where she is undergoing rehabilitation.”

Coetzee said Marli cannot make a complete police statement, due to the extensive trauma she had suffered.

She can talk, but not for long and is constantly being monitored. Marli has also been under police guard during her treatment at the Mediclinic Vergelegen.

Her parents, Martin (54) and Teresa (55), and her older brother, Rudi van Breda (22), were all killed in the axe attack. Her other brother, Henri (20), survived the attack and has since been living with an uncle.

Coetzee said her health had improved considerably, but like anyone who had sustained serious head injuries, she cannot yet function 100% and she must undergo occupational and physical therapy to regain her strength.

Six weeks after the murder, no one has yet been arrested, but police said have handed a dossier on a prime suspect to the National Prosecuting Authority.
