Teenager appeals for help

A TEENAGE boy in Emgodini in the Edendale area is appealing for help after his family home was damaged by the heavy storm last week.

Njabulo Mthethwa (18), a grade 10 pupil at Smero Secondary School, has been living alone in the house since his mother’s death two years ago.

Speaking to The Witness, Mthethwa said he was watching television on Wednesday night when the storm hit, and he had to flee to a neighbour’s house when the roof was blown away.

“Most of the things were damaged, including the furniture and electrical appliances. Currently, I have moved all my things to the Khumalo home who are my neighbours and have been helping me with school fees, food and clothing from the beginning of this year,” he said.

Gogo Gertrude Khumalo said she became aware about Mthethwa’s plight, after her grandson had told her about him, saying that he would often see him sitting beside a big rock.

She said: “I knew that his mother had died, but I was not aware that he did not even have food and he could not afford to pay school fees.

“We have been assisting him from his home, and since this incident, he has moved in with us until he can find some help.”

Mthethwa said that what saddens him the most is that the house is the only legacy he has that will always remind him of his mother.

“All I need is a safe house where I can be comfortable. This family is already doing so much for me,” said Mthethwa.

Ward councillor Dumisani Lushozi said that he is waiting for feedback from ward committee members about how many people were affected by storm damage in the area.

He is to send a report to the Msunduzi Municipality Disaster Management team.

People who are willing to help can contact Gogo Khumalo at 033 399 2890 or 082 507 6038.
