Teens scatter on beach after liquor theft spotted

THREE teenagers — whom a Park Rynie restaurant manager claims he caught red handed after they allegedly broke into his complex to steal liquor — will appear in court today.

Thumba Govender said the Tidal House Bar and Restaurant on the town’s beachfront was broken into on consecutive nights over the weekend.

He lamented that “unsavoury elements” had spoiled holiday fun over the Easter weekend both this year and last year.

“On Friday night they broke into the bar and stole about R3 000 worth of alcohol,” said Govender.

“They also vandalised my place.

“Unfortunately you get the bad that come along with the good. Last year as well they broke into the place and stole alcohol.”

Govender said he was about to close up shop just after midnight on Sunday when he noticed a group of youths loitering near the building.

“I made sure I alarmed the place but I left the lights on.

“Two of my employees and I locked up and parked behind the building to see what was happening.”

He also contacted the police and his security company to alert them as to what was happening.

“There was a group of about seven of them that started to break in. A few of them climbed up a sewer pipe to the bar area which is on the second storey.”

They gained entrance into the building by breaking a window.

“The one inside started to remove cases of alcohol and throw it down to those waiting on the ground.”

At this stage the police and security company had still not arrived.

“We decided to apprehend them ourselves. I also phoned my son to come to the scene.”

He said when the youths noticed Govender and his workers they ran away.

“They started to run on the beach in different directions. We managed to catch three of them who still had the liquor in their possession,” he said.

“By then the police and security guards were also on the scene,” he added. Lieutenant Colonel Zandra Wiid confirmed that three juveniles all aged 17 were arrested with bottles of alcohol in their possession.

She said they are in police custody at Scottburgh police station and that all three would appear in court today. The suspects were from the Wentworth area.
