Telkom Charity Cup: AmaZulu top the polls for fans' choice in pre-season tournament

2010-07-30 00:00

NEWLY-APPOINTED AmaZulu coach Manqoba Mngqithi would want nothing more than to see his club participate in the Telkom Charity Cup next Saturday so as to fairly gauge its readiness for the approaching Premier Soccer League season.

By early yesterday morning, AmaZulu had shot from nowhere and were closing in on 50 000 votes to top the poll in which fans choose a team to play in the tournament.

Fans have until Sunday evening to vote four teams into the tournament, which takes place in August.

“We are happy to see the people of this province and South Africa voting in numbers. It is an indication that they want to see their favourite team early in the season,” Mngqithi told The Witness yesterday.

“It is my wish to have the team take part in this kind of tournament as it gives the technical staff an opportunity to assess the players further.”

The last time the Durban side participated in the pre-season one-day tournament was in 1996.

Midfielder Ntokozo Sikhakhane, is familiar with the Charity Cup, having spent three seasons at Kaizer Chiefs. He said it is encouraging to see fans voting in their numbers and that the atmosphere of the occasion would make for a worthwhile experience for his team-mates.

Pre-season tournament aside, Former Lamontville Golden Arrows coach Mngqithi has to contend with the absence of striker Dumisani Ngwenya and left-back Marc van Heerden, who have both suffered knee injuries.

The coach revealed that Ngwenya will miss the first two games of the new season and described Van Heerden’s sidelining for two or three months as “a major blow considering the position he’s playing”.

After failing to land Ugandan goalkeeper Dennis Onyango from SuperSport United, who has transferred to Mpumalanga BlackAces, former FC Fortune and Mamelodi Sundowns keeper Thembalethu Moses has been signed by Usuthu.

To vote, phone 986 2222 501 or SMS your team’s name to 34620.

Following closely behind AmaZulu in second spot yesterday were Mamelodi Sundowns on 43 357 votes, Kaizer Chiefs had 38 541 and 32 193 votes were garnered by Orlando Pirates.
