Telkom Cup: Downs beat AmaZulu 2-0

2012-11-05 00:00

DURBAN — Mamelodi Sundowns defeated AmaZulu 2-0 at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday afternoon to book their place in the semi-finals of the Telkom Knockout.

Second half goals from Eleazar Rodgers and Teko Modise were enough for Johan Neesken’s side to see out an AmaZulu side which played too conservatively on the day.

Despite playing away from home, Sundowns took the first initiative and came close to breaking the deadlock in the 16th minute, but both Tebogo Langerman and Anthony Laffor saw their efforts deflected away by defenders.

The hosts created one of their rare chances in the 25th minute, but Nyiko Tshabangu fired wide from the left after he was set up by Dulee Johnson.

A minute later, it was Sundowns who forced the goalkeeper to make a save when Rodgers connected with a cross from Laffor, but Philani Zikalala had it covered.

The visitors had an even better chance in the 37th minute when they were awarded a penalty for a handball by Carlington Nyadombo, but Laffor saw his low shot saved by Zikalala, who dived to his right.

The opening goal arrived in the 53rd minute from a quick break which saw Jabulani Shongwe playing a defence-splitting pass to release Rodgers on the left, and the lanky striker placed his shot at the far post to score his first goal for the Brazilians, 1-0. Modise scored the second goal in the 85th minute with a well-taken penalty kick after Philani Cele was adjudged to have fouled substitute Nyasha Mushekwi in the box.
