Temp, contract staff cut

2010-05-08 00:00

THE Msunduzi Municipality is set to save approximately R3 million a month now that it is no longer making use of temporary and contract workers.

This was confirmed by Msunduzi administrator Johann Mettler yesterday, who told Weekend Witness that approximately 122 temporary and contract workers from various departments are no longer employed by the municipality as of yesterday.

He said of those 122 temporary and contract staffing positions, about 20 will need to be filled by people with specific skills.

“It was management’s decision and we’re still busy with that,” he said.

Sources based at the city hall who spoke to Weekend Witness on condition of anonymity said most temps were actually working in positions that were vacant, and were hopeful that as time went on that they would be made permanent.

These people are very depressed as they are now unemployed.”

Asked whether the loss of skills would have a negative effect on the municipality, Mettler said: “Not really. We are very careful and mindful of the fact that we need to improve service delivery and have definite plans and strategies that will be put in place, especially for waste collection.”
