Ten years' jail for killer pupil

2007-11-20 00:00

Mazwi Mkhwanazi, who pleaded guilty to killing Nokulunga Ndala, was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment, five suspended. He will serve two years at Westville Prison and the remainder at Ekuseni Correctional Centre in Newcastle.

Judge President Vuka Tshabalala said the schoolboy was remorseful for his crime, but the sentence had to be appropriate to protect teachers by sending out a message that such a crime will not be tolerated.

Prosecutor Bheki Mnyathi said teachers are faced with danger every day and it is becoming a huge problem in society. He added that while Mkhawanazi is also young, his teacher was in the prime of life and had wedding plans and other goals to be fulfilled.

Ndala caught Mkhwanazi cheating during a test and asked him to start again, but the pupil said he was feeling ill and asked for permission to go home.

Instead of going home, Mkhwanazi left the school premises for a while and when he returned he attacked Ndala while she stood at the blackboard. He stabbed her 14 times in the back and neck. He was arrested a few hours later.
