Tenacious basketball

BASKETBALL at both Alex and Maritzburg College is played on an outdoor court and on Saturday the players from both teams at both venues must be commended for their tenacity in the heat.

On the first Saturday of February, with the season drawing towards its close, Maritzburg College first-team basketball played their first home game of the 2010 season, against the powerful and well-drilled Michaelhouse first team.

Played on a cloudless and windless day, with the temperature exceeding 40 degrees on the court, the two teams played with determination. Baskets were traded throughout each of the quarters, with neither team giving an inch.

The final score of 50-45 in College’s favour, is a great reflection of the intensity of the match.

Alex played two matches this week. They won the midweek game against Treverton and lost the Saturday game against Kearsney.

Alex travelled to Treverton on Wednesday and due to lack of time played a running time game against Treverton. They won the first quarter 8-2 and Treverton came back in the second quarter winning that 11-10. Alex won both the third and fourth quarters and so won the match 38-26. Dini Mpofana was the best scorer with 10 points.

On Saturday, the games were played at Alex as part of Alex’s 50th celebrations. In the searing heat, Kearsney outplayed Alex. Alex were down two points at the end of the first quarter, getting one back in the second quarter to trail 19-22 at half-time. The second half saw more baskets being scored, with the Alex boys more affected and their defence weakened. Kearsney eventually ran out 71-59 winners.

RESULTS

Maritzburg College 50 Michaelhouse 45; Kearsney 71 Alexandra 59; DHS 80 St Charles 28; Kearsney 68 Clifton 34; Alexandra 38 Treverton 26; Clifton 28 Westville 25.
