Tender graft accused on R1 mln bail

2008-11-05 00:00

Indiza Infrastructure Solutions boss Jabulani Mabaso of Durban appeared briefly in Pietermaritzburg Magistrate’s Court yesterday on charges of fraud, money laundering and corruption involving the Education Department, and was granted R1 million bail.

The charges against Mabaso, which the court was told involve R270 million, arise from investigations conducted by the Scorpions and relate to a tender awarded to Indiza by the KZN Education Department for the supply of stationery to schools in the province.

The charge sheet is still being drafted.

Mabaso has been locked in an legal battle with the department for some time, but the details have not been released.

Mabaso and Indiza also featured in the media over his alleged failure to divulge a R43 million payment to the SA Revenue Services (SARS) in 2007.

Mabaso undertook to comply with all bail conditions, not to interfere with state witnesses and surrendered his passport.

After granting him bail, magistrate Paul van Dongen adjourned the case until March 18 pending further investigations.
