Tendulkar not chasing records, dedicates 50 test tons to late father

2010-12-20 00:00

SACHIN Tendulkar became the first player to make 50 Test hundreds at Centurion yesterday, and the “Little Master” immediately dedicated the landmark achievement to his late father.

Similarly, Proteas ace Jacques Kallis dedicated his first double-hundred in Test cricket, which he reached on Saturday, to the memory of his father.

“It is a pity he wasn’t there to see it, but I am sure he was watching from up there with my mom,” the Proteas kingpin said.

“I will have a beer with him tonight.”

Tendulkar, meanwhile, had identified this Test as an opportunity for something special.

“It was his birthday yesterday, so I wanted to dedicate this one to him,” the 37-year- old Tendulkar said when play was stopped by a storm on day four.

After reaching his latest record, the Indian genius now has 97 international hundreds to his name, but insists that he is not driven by records.

“I don’t play for records, I do this for the love of the game,” he insisted.

“At the end of the day, every time I go out to bat, my country needs me and I always want to make runs for my country,” he said.

The Test enters its final day today, with India still 30 runs shy of making the Proteas bat for a second time.

Tendulkar remains at the crease, on 107 not out.
