Terblanche fined for twitter jibe

SHARKS centre and fullback Stefan Terblanche, who has a squeaky-clean image after 17 years of provincial and Test rugby, has suddenly fallen foul of the Sanzar heavies.

Terblanche, who turned 36 a fortnight ago, has been fined nearly R15 000 for a comment on Twitter over the eligibility of Sharks team-mate Riaan Swanepoel.

The former Sharks captain posted his remarks ahead of the quarter-final game against the Crusaders in Nelson on June 25 and after Sanzar had ruled against replacement centre Swanepoel being included as one of the tour replacements.

“Sanzar again being very impartial,” he tweeted.

“The Sharks not even allowed to take who we want on tour. Pathetic!!

“Not allowed to take Swanepoel who has been part of squad all year and toured with us for 4 weeks. He didn’t play 4 games. Caleb Ralph, Reds?”

Terblanche was charged under Sanzar’s code of conduct for misusing the social media website and appeared before judicial officer Terry Willis yesterday.

He pleaded guilty, apologised and agreed that Sanzar had correctly ruled on the ineligibility of Swanepoel to participate in the Nelson qualifier.

Terblanche was fined AUS$2 000 (R14 700). “Apologies to Sanzar,” he tweeted later.

But, of course, the law is an ass. Swanepoel, a regular member of the Sharks squad throughout this year’s Super Rugby competition, was ruled out of the quarter-final because he had not played in four games.

In contrast, Schalk Brits was rushed into the Stormers team just for the semi-final while Frenchman Frederic Michalak was a late addition to the Sharks’ squad. They were cleared to play because of injuries to other players.
